ROAD 2 SUCCESS JOURNAL.
By Lanisha Holland
The other day I happened to meet another soap maker thru social media or should I say someone interested in learning how to make soap. My new associate mentioned she wanted to start a business making soap so she wanted to ask me a few questions on how I got started. I explained to her soap came after I started making body butters because I wanted to expand my product line for Happily Naturally Me. I started off by making the body butters for myself and one day a conversation with a friend prompted me to start my own business. Literally the conversation went like this:
Friend: I am going to buy body butters as gifts for some of my coworkers.
Me: No!!! Don’t go buy them from the store; I will make them and you can buy them from me.
That very night I learned how to make scented ones with essential oils and went out to buy material to practice. Within 2 weeks I had everything packaged and ready to go. Just like that I had created a second stream of income for myself.
My new friend proceeded with asking more questions about getting started on making things and how much money she would need to get up and running. She hadn’t even started experimenting, but she was sure she wanted to start a soap making business. Like how do you know you will even like making soap if you haven’t even tried doing it yet? Cost can vary depending on what state requirements you have and how much materiel you want to start with.
A month had gone by and I decided to reach out to see what her progress was and of course she hadn’t even started doing anything yet. Her reasoning was she just wasn’t ready to start yet. Seriously what are you waiting for? I just wanted to yell and say, “Just start doing something already.” Sometimes we over analyze things way too much and doing this holds us back. Diving right in to it and figuring things out along the way is sometimes the best method. Trust me when I say you are never going to have all the answers because once you figure out one thing, another issue will come along that you need to figure out.
When opportunity knocks on the door, you have to just take it whether you think you are ready or not. My motto is to just start doing and you will figure out the details along the way. I use to think so much and never get anything done so now I just say oh well I will figure it out. Don’t get me wrong, I am still a planner and thinker, but sometimes I just realize how much time I am wasting by not starting. When it comes to your business just go with what feels right at the time and you will figure it out. My gut may not always be right, but at least I’m taking action.
